Module 10: THE HUNGER GAMES: Yoga & Mindfulness for Tweens, Teens, & Athletes

Like every generation, our young people today face challenges and opportunities that previous generations could only dream of. The difference today is that the massive, tectonic changes that once took ages to unfold are now unraveling exponentially. The Internet, social media, 24-hour cable television, and the like are forcing us to rewrite the script moment to moment. A lack of academic preparation, a decline in social-emotional learning, an explosion of mental health issues, a rise in both behavioral and physical disability diagnoses, a drug crisis, an overall lack of resiliency-our kids are in trouble, they are hurting, and they are screaming at us for help.
In this session, we’ll explore the developmental roadmap and navigate the research and evidence-based practices that guide our work with tweens, teens, young adults, and athletes. We’ll explore how to help young people build positive relationships with their bodies and to cultivate healthy interactions with their peers. We’ll also discuss and practice integrating a regular yoga and mindfulness practice into athletic training.
Primary module topics and activities include a practicum experience with community partners, brain and social and emotional development, gross and fine motor development, games, problem-solving and team-building activities, and strategies for effectively balancing the mind, body, and spirit of tweens, teens, young adults and athletes.
